We're Nylas. We build APIs that businesses use to unlock the potential of email, calendars, and contacts. We take care of the complicated stuff, so our customers don't have to. Much like what Stripe does for credit cards, or what Twilio does for SMS and voice, we do for mail, calendar, and contacts.
About the Position
Our documentation footprint is extensive and in need of curation and improvement. Developers bookmark our API docs and reference them constantly while building out their applications. They also intensively use our SDKs and look through our open source projects for inspiration and help. Finally, our technical knowledge base is an ever-expanding compendium of resources that attempt to capture the complexity of email, calendaring, and contacts.
We're looking to hire an experienced technical writer to organize our documentation and make it more consistent, more useful, and more informative. You will be the first technical writer on the team, so you will play a key role in determining our content strategy and tooling. You will ensure that our documentation is easy to find, easy to follow, and helps our customers find the answers they are looking for.
Here are some projects that you can expect to work on:
- Owning the documentation experience for our products
- Writing, editing, and organizing technical documentation for our REST API and our SDKs
- Creating "Getting Started" guides for common use cases for our product
- Working with our Developer Relations team to find and fix pain points in our docs
- Working with our Marketing team to create whitepapers and other technical marketing material
- Setting a consistent voice and style across all our documentation
We know there's a lot we don't know. We expect there will be much more to do that we haven't thought about yet.
The ideal candidate for this position is a self-starter. Organization and prioritization skills are critical: we can't do everything at once, and we're relying on you to help us figure out which projects will provide the maximum impact. You have experience with writing and organizing technical content, ideally focused on APIs. You have strong opinions about technical documentation but can compromise and work together with others nonetheless.
We have physical offices in San Francisco and New York City; however, this position works remotely, and we work well distributedly. We have a slight preference for North American timezones but can also work with other timezones.
We are looking for either a long term contract position or ongoing part time work. We envision a lot of upfront work to pull our docs into alignment and a fair amount of continuous improvements, new projects, and maintenance. A significant portion of upfront work will be scoping additional work. If you have something else in mind (including full-time work), contact us: we're interested in hearing what you propose.
