About the Role

The Product team at OpenFin is working to transformatively improve the developer experience of OpenFin products, making it easy for developers working for our customers and partners to get started and do what they need with OpenFin. Technical information, including documentation and example code, is a crucial part of that experience. We are looking for a programmer-turned-writer or a very techie technical writer to substantially own and drive projects to develop new information resources or to improve existing ones.

Responsibilities

  • Work independently to plan, create, edit, and produce accurate and effective technical documentation that enhances the developer experience by providing just the information that developers need, when they need it.
  • Collaborate across the organization, including with product management, engineering, sales, and support, to understand audiences’ needs for information, to develop information deliverables to address those needs, and to ensure the accuracy of the content.
  • Communicate with stakeholders regarding prioritization and progress of documentation projects.
  • Contribute your expertise to recommend and help implement enhancements to documentation infrastructure, standards, and processes.
  • Provide peer editing and coaching about writing to non-writer team members who contribute to documentation.
  • Help define metrics for documentation and use a data-driven approach to prioritize and drive improvements.

What We’re Looking For

Basic Qualifications

  • Impeccable written and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Five or more years of experience in technical writing for developer audiences.
  • A writing portfolio that shows off your strong technical writing skills through developer-focussed samples.
  • Substantial experience with Git and GitHub.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Academic training in professional writing, software development, finance, or a related field.
  • Experience using a plain-text markup language such as Markdown, Asciidoc, or ReST.
  • Experience with .NET or Java programming.
  • Projects that demonstrate your ability to write JavaScript code.
  • More than one year of working on a distributed team.
  • Familiarity with docs-as-code approaches to documentation, as well as familiarity with continuous integration and deployment tools.

Traits That Help You Succeed

  • Curiosity: You have a passion for investigating and learning about new technologies.
  • Collaborative bent: You thrive by drawing on the diverse skills, strengths, and expertise of others across the organization.
  • Self direction: You are able to plan, prioritize, and execute deliverables without hand-holding.
  • Perspective-taking: You can see topics from the point of view of a newcomer while building expertise in OpenFin products.
  • Empathy: You understand the needs and workflows of software developers.
  • Inclusivity: You amplify and support underrepresented voices within the organization and you are alert to avoiding biased terms in documentation, API keywords, and general communication.
